Overview

Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Hospitalist

The Division of Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplantation at Children’s Mercy Kansas City is recruiting for a full-time board certified / board eligible Pediatric Hematology/Oncology physician.  This physician will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level with strong clinical skills who will join the division to provide primarily inpatient Hem/Onc Hospitalist care for nights and weekends. The candidate for this clinical position will participate in clinical, research, and educational efforts and should have an interest in mentoring residents and/or H/O fellows.

The Division is made up of 27 total physicians who focus in one of 4 areas – Oncology, Hematology, Bone Marrow Transplantation, or Inpatient Hem/Onc Hospitalist care. The inpatient unit has 38 fully hepa-filtered private patient rooms and floor where all Hem/Onc patients are admitted. Inpatients are overseen in the day by 4 Hem/Onc services – an inpatient resident/fellow H/O service, 1 chemo service, 1 BMT service, and 1 inpatient coagulation consultation service – all staffed by residents and/or advanced practice professionals. Overnight a dedicated resident is in house covering the Hem/Onc patients with the Hospitalist. A fellow is on call each night as well covering outpatient and some inpatient calls and available to come in as needed.

Outpatient clinic facilities include 14 infusion bays and 18 exam rooms wholly dedicated to Hem/Onc patients. All medical, pathology, radiologic and surgical subspecialties are represented at CM who work closely in the care of children with cancer. Shifts not devoted to covering nights or weekends also make up a portion of the total working hours when fully staffed and these remaining available times offer opportunities to further career development and professional activities that exist with all the 4 areas in Hem/Onc. The Division has a Quality improvement council in which numerous opportunities are available. As well, each section (Hematology, Oncology, BMT) has a history of collaboration and professional growth for our Hem/Onc Hospitalists encompassing research, QI, teaching, and patient advocacy.

Academic appointment is with the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, where we are the primary pediatric teaching site for students, residents and fellows. Salary range and academic appointment are commensurate with experience.
