At Children’s Mercy, we believe in making a difference in the lives of all children and shining a light of hope to the patients and families we serve. Our employees make the difference, which is why we have been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a top pediatric hospital, for eleven consecutive years.

Children’s Mercy is in the heart of Kansas City – a metro abounding in cultural experiences, vibrant communities and thriving businesses. This is where our patients and families live, work and play. This is a community that has embraced our hospital and we strive to say thanks by giving back. As a leader in children’s health, we engage in meaningful programs and partnerships throughout the region so that we can improve the lives of children beyond the walls of our hospital.

Overview

Children’s Mercy Kansas City is recruiting a full time physician to join our Beacon Program, a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary, primary care and consultative care program for Children with Medical Complexity (CMC) and their siblings.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience in caring for CMC. Approximately 80% of the position will be dedicated to clinical service, including outpatient clinics, telemedicine clinics, and care coordination. 20% of the position’s effort will be available for pursuit of academic and research interests. Additional characteristics that are desirable but not required include: experience with inpatient management of CMC; training and/or evidence of success in Health Services/Outcomes Research; and previous leadership experience.

Quality improvement programs are integral to the Beacon Program; its providers and staff constantly strive to improve processes and efficiency. The Beacon Program has multiple active research projects; participation in these efforts is encouraged by Beacon Program physicians.

The Beacon Program began in November 2013 and cares for approximately 300 of the most medically complex and technologically dependent patients in the Kansas City metro area, as well as over 100 of their siblings. It also provides consultative telemedicine support to primary care providers in more distant rural communities who care for CMC. Additionally, the Beacon Program works closely with pediatric specialists and hospitalists to provide continuous care at all access points in the healthcare system.

The Beacon Program is well supported with a nurse practitioner care manager, nurse clinical services coordinators, social workers, registered dietitians, a clinical psychologist, a care assistant, a pharmacist, and clinic nurses.  There are also ancillary support services, including respiratory therapy, interpretive services, and administrative support staff for the team.

Improving care for CMC is a strategic priority for Children’s Mercy Kansas City, and the Beacon Program is championed by administrative and academic leadership at the institution. With future growth, the Beacon Program plans to care for approximately 450-600 of the most complex and technologically dependent children in the Kansas City metro area.  This is an incredible opportunity for a physician to care for CMC within an established yet growing, well-supported clinical program.

Salary and academic rank are commensurate with experience.
